Guy Fiero - The Sunroof

Pick One:

Prologue

Daily Driving A Fiero

Mr. Saturn

Next, the Fiero decided to hit me with an absolute classic. The first time I took the car to work on a rainy day, I learned the hard way that the sunroof leaks.

I had "tested" this by leaving the car outside on a couple rainy days and checking for leaks, but this was a particularly bad storm.

After getting home, I pulled into the barn and began to investigate. The general advice was to check on the drain holes, and make sure they weren't clogged. Unfortunately, I ran into a bit of a problem.

This car doesn't have those.

That's right, GM initially designed this car without any drains for the sunroof tracks. That means that after they fill up, the water has nowhere to go except the interior.

Fortunately, GM did put out a service bulletin to resolve the issue. Their advice?: Drill some holes in your roof.

That's not a joke, GM put out an actual service bulletin telling you to drill 4 holes in the plastic roof, underneath the weatherstripping. If it was that easy, why were there no drain holes in the first place?

There is also the question of "where does the water go now"? The answer is quite simple: don't worry about it.

I drilled the holes, and hopefully the sunroof will now seal properly.
